    On Avoiding Deep Dementia.Norman L. Cantor - 2018 - Hastings Center Report 48 (4):15-24.
Some people will confront Alzheimer's with a measure of resignation, a determination to struggle against the progressive debilitation and to extract whatever comforts and benefits they can from their remaining existence. They are entitled to pursue that resolute path. For other people, like myself, protracted maintenance during progressive cognitive dysfunction and helplessness is an intolerably degrading prospect. The critical question for those of us seeking to avoid protracted dementia is how best to accomplish that objective. One strategy is to engineer one's (...)

    Semiotic error in Roentgen diagnosis.Robert M. Cantor - 2000 - Semiotica 2005 (154 - 1/4):1-10.
After defining the concept of error as it applies to Roentgen semiotics, we present a typology of the sources of semiotic error in clinical practice. It is a typology based on clinical observation, with the Peircean Categories and the triadic structure of Roentgen signs as organizing principles. This is followed by a review of a general psychological typology of the sources of human error. We conclude with the demonstration of a Category preserving correspondence between psychologic and semiotic sources of error. (...)

  16. The Best-Interests Standard as Threshold, Ideal, and Standard of Reasonableness.L. M. Kopelman - 1997 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 22 (3):271-289.
The best-interests standard is a widely used ethical, legal, and social basis for policy and decision-making involving children and other incompetent persons. It is under attack, however, as self-defeating, individualistic, unknowable, vague, dangerous, and open to abuse. The author defends this standard by identifying its employment, first, as a threshold for intervention and judgment (as in child abuse and neglect rulings), second, as an ideal to establish policies or prima facie duties, and, third, as a standard of reasonableness. Criticisms of (...)

On the embodied meaning of emotional responses to music: A semiotic perspective.Robert M. Cantor - 2019 - Semiotica 2019 (231):225-244.
Previous attempts to find meaning in emotional responses to music often begin with analysis of dynamic tonal patterns, with observation of the emotional behavior of listeners or with self-reports of emotional feelings. In this study, we begin with a somewhat detailed description of physical processes in the human auditory system that lead to the activation of processes in the autonomic nervous system, which produce embodied emotional responses to environmental challenges. We then propose an answer to the question: Why were some (...)

    Vision science: An empirical basis for Roentgen semiotics.Robert M. Cantor - 2012 - Semiotica 2012 (192):65-76.
In this paper, we demonstrate an empirical basis for Roentgen semiotics in vision science. We first observe that the triad of phases in the process of Roentgen diagnosis, previously termed detection, localization, and identification, originate at the cellular level in well-described visual pathways in the brain. We then demonstrate that the phenomenology of local Roentgen signs is derived from the physiology of cells in the detection, localization, and identification pathways. Furthermore, we infer that a fundamental duality principle in the interpretation (...)

Memory systems do not divide on consciousness: Reinterpreting memory in terms of activation and binding.L. M. Reder, H. Park & P. D. Kieffaber - 2009 - Psychological Bulletin 135 (1).
There is a popular hypothesis that performance on implicit and explicit memory tasks reflects 2 distinct memory systems. Explicit memory is said to store those experiences that can be consciously recollected, and implicit memory is said to store experiences and affect subsequent behavior but to be unavailable to conscious awareness. Although this division based on awareness is a useful taxonomy for memory tasks, the authors review the evidence that the unconscious character of implicit memory does not necessitate that it be (...)

Giraldus Odonis O.F.M.: Opera Philosophica.: Vol. I. Logica . Critical Edition From the Manuscripts.L. M. De Rijk (ed.) - 1997 - New York: Brill.
This edition of Giraldus Odonis' Logica for the first time gives access to an important and original treatise, which has unduly been neglected since the author's death. It is also important in that it gives evidence of interesting achievements in the field of logic outside the anti-metaphysical circle surrounding Ockham.
